Darrell Clarke was pleased with his Barnsley side’s 3-0 win at Accrington Stanley and hoped the injury picked up by Josh Benson was not serious.

Adam Phillips, Aiden Marsh and Josh Earl scored for the Reds who will now train at Loughborough University this coming week.

Clarke said: “It’s a good work out for the lads. In the first half we had a lot of territory, control and set pieces. They had four or five entries in our box but we looked a little bit vulnerable.

There’s work to be done

“I have never got any points in pre-season. It’s all about work and getting ideas into the team.”

Two of the goals were from corners. Clarke said: “Teams who are successful have to score from set pieces and defend them well. Early (Josh Earl) has a couple now. We have good delivery in Conor (Hourihane), Luca (Connell) and Corey (O’Keeffe)”

Luca Connell did not play as his partner has recently given birth. He is due to attend the pre-season camp in Loughborough.

Josh Benson came off after 37 minutes. Clarke said: “Josh has had a good pre-season and he’s had injury problems. He would have only played 45 anyway. Hopefully it’s just tightness. He will be assessed.”

Barnsley brought on trialist Mipo Odubeko, an Irish striker who started at West Ham. Clarke said: “I had Mipo with me at Port Vale. He’s come in and got minutes. He’s been a talent. He probably stayed at West Ham too long.

We’ll have a look at him when we get back from Loughborough.”
