BRAMPTON Post Office is set to close to the public later this month - much to the annoyance of a local MP.

The Post Office, which is currently situated on Knollbeck Lane, is set to close on July 27 at 1pm.

Representatives say it is due to the resignation of the postmaster, but they admit they are working hard to find a new site as to not affect local residents.

A spokesperson said: “I would like to assure you that we are working hard to keep any period of closure to a minimum and we are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community.

“In exploring this, it is important that any future service is sustainable for the person operating the service, and for Post Office Limited.

“We apologise for the inconvenience the closure may cause. We hope that our customers will continue to use Post Office services.”

They have asked locals to use services in Wombwell and West Melton - but MP John Healey has hit out at the decision in a letter to the chief executive Nick Read.

He said: “Whilst the unplanned closure letter refers to alternative branches at West Melton and Wombwell, these locations are not easily accessible for those in Brampton who rely on our current Post Office branch to access these services.

“Therefore, I’m writing to urge the Post Office to secure a new location to continue to provide these services in Brampton.

“Given the expected closure of our current branch at the end of this month, I also ask that any new premise is established as soon as possible to ensure the least possible disruption to our services.”

He added that the loss of the service will bring a ‘lot of uncertainty’ and ‘worry’ with it.

“I am very concerned to see the Post Office have published their unplanned branch closure letter on their website announcing our Brampton Post Office is set to close on Saturday July 27.

“I know this has caused a lot of concern and worry in the community as it understandably leads to fears for the possible loss of Post Office services in Brampton.

“I note the Post Office’s branch closure letter does say they are investigating options to enable them to reinstate their services in our community.

“I’m determined to work with the Post Office to support any efforts to secure a new base in Brampton, especially for all those in our community who rely on and need these services.

“Alongside our local councillors in Brampton Rajmund Brent, Denise Lelliott and John Williams we’re clear that our community needs a Post Office service.”
