BARNSLEY gained another centenarian when Fred Mellor marked his 100th birthday - but his day was made extra special because his 102-year-old big brother was there to raise a toast.

Fred, from Penistone, served as an aircraft mechanic in Africa and India during World War Two before finding a job in the textile industry.

He asked for donations in lieu of gifts when he gathered his nearest and dearest for his get-together at The Fairway in Dodworth and topping the guestlist was his brother, Carl Mellor.

He gifted £630 to Rosemere Cancer Foundation, championed by sons Peter and Mike Mellor, who together with sister Pat are Fred’s three children.

Fred, who still lives independently, also gave the same amount to The Lullaby Trust which raises awareness of sudden infant death syndrome and supports those bereaved by the condition.

Mike said: “Dad likes to cook, bake and do quizzes on his iPad.

“The party was great - there were 67 of us and besides his three children, dad has four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.”
