MORE than 100 tyres found fly-tipped by a road in Cawthorne have led Barnsley Council to look into putting more pressure on unregistered tyre dealers.
Barnsley Council’s environmental services team were alerted to the incident by a member of the public, who reported 20 tyres left in the road at South Lane.
However when staff arrived, they found closer to 30 tyres in the road, and more than 100 dumped in the culvert at the side of the carriageway - a load which they estimate would fill two pick-up trucks.
Paul Castle, service director at the council, said over the last six months large amounts of fly-tipped tyres have become a ‘common theme’ in the council’s ongoing battle with fly-tippers, which the council puts down to unregistered tyre dealers not disposing of old tyres through the proper channels.
“Someone clearly knew what they were doing here,” said Paul.
“If I was running a tyre business, I would be very annoyed by this. It’s socially unacceptable, and it’s giving them a bad name.
“The other side is obviously the environmental impact.”
