A FORMER miner who retrained as a teacher is on a mission to make sure all children in Barnsley know about the town’s mining history and about its worst mining tragedy 150 years ago this year.

The Oaks Colliery Disaster remains the worst coal mining disaster in English mining history and killed 361 Barnsley men and boys - some estimates are even higher.

Teacher Paul Darlow is now working with People and Mining and the NUM to encourage all Barnsley school children, especially in those schools close to the Oaks site near Ardsley, to commemorate the anniversary and learn more about the disaster.
