BARNSLEY patients with kidney stones can now have innovative treatment at their local hospital.

This week Barnsley Hospital’s urology department treated the first kidney stone patients using their new extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) equipment.

ESWL uses a soft probe which touches against the patient’s skin to deliver shockwaves that are focused on the kidney stone, breaking them up and allowing them to be passed naturally out of the body.

The latest third generation ESWL machines are extremely effective, and success rates of more than 90 per cent have been reported depending on the size of the stone and its position.
