THE director, producer and stars of the film Kes were among about 130 people who squeezed into Tankersley Church to bid a tearful farewell to the unforgettable story’s writer Barry Hines.

Barnsley’s most celebrated writer Barry died last month aged 76 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

His daughter Sally Hines, brother Richard, Kes director Ken Loach, producer Tony Garnett and poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan all spoke lovingly and passionately about Barry during the service at St Peter’s Church on Tuesday.

Each of them moved the large congregation to both laughter and tears.

Barry’s daughter Sally described a wonderful, kind and caring father who had an incredible sense of humour. She said he could also be stubborn, especially when it came to his strong political beliefs.
