A primary teacher banned for a minimum of two years for the mishandling of SATs papers in his previous job, has been given an office job at Shafton Primary.

Mike Schofield, 44, taught year six pupils at Shafton Primary before being given the ban in March.

This was following wrong doings over SATs papers while headteacher at Haxby Road Primary School in York.

A letter from headteacher Ruth Lyons was sent out to parents last week; saying Mr Schofield has been offered a change of contract.

In it she said Mr Schofield would be taking up the position of school improvement and communications officer on May 7.

The newly created post forms part of the admin team, she said, and will also allow the school to respond to feedback from parents about improving communication and sharing the school's achievements with the community.

Mr Schofield has been employed on a one year contract which will be reviewed by governors, she added.

"The new post is not a teaching post and Mr Schofield will not be involved in any learning activities - during the school day or after school," she said.

"We are pleased that we will be able to benefit from Mr Schofield's expertise and understanding of education to help us establish this new role and support school improvements."

Mike Barnett of the school's sponsors, The Academies Enterprise Trust said Mr Schofield's appeal against the ban had not been upheld and added "in the mean time his knowledge of the school and the pupils is put to good use out of the classroom."
