A police officer who won a Proud of Barnsley award for pulling a woman from a burning building in Wombwell has also been recognised by South Yorkshire Police at an annual awards ceremony.
Chris Thompson received a Commander's Commendation at the police awards ceremony held at Barnsley Town Hall, after winning the Emergency Services category at the inaugural Proud of Barnsley awards.
PCSO of the Year was Katherine McFadzean (Central SNT) who won because of her excellent work in Barnsley over the last year.
The Jan Parton Police Staff of the Year Outstanding Achievement was awarded to Peter Murray from the Intelligence Unit.
The award was created in 2006 and is presented to a member of support staff who has gone the extra mile in delivering excellent service.
It is presented in memory of Jan Parton, a member of staff who died of cancer in November 2010.
Jan started working for South Yorkshire Police in 1995, moving to Barnsley in 1998, working in the source unit. Her widower Dave presented the award.
PC Andrea Batty, of Darton/Dodworth SNT, was awarded the Safer Neighbourhood Team Officer of the year for her exceptional drive and performance in identifying and acting upon the priorities of her area and creating robust public engagement structures and also mentoring her colleagues.
The Don Betton award is awarded to the probationer who has shown the greatest development and contribution and was won by PC Sarah Botham.
Don Betton joined the force in 1972 and worked most of his service at Barnsley police station.
He died suddenly in 1989 and the award was presented by Don's daughter, Detective Chief Inspector Debbie Mahmood.
The special constable of the year was awarded to A/Special Sergeant Laura-Jayne Gamble, who will also be put forward for the Force Special Constable of the Year.
A new award created in 2008, the Leaders in Action Outstanding Award was presented to Chris Foster of B Group, Barnsley, who has demonstrated exceptional leadership.
Commander's Commendations were also presented to: PCSO Andrea Ford (Dodworth), PCSO Jonathan Bentley (Royston) and Barnsley response officers PC Ryan Griffiths, PC Mark Winter, PC Christopher Phillips, PC Robert Simpson.
