Barnsley conceded an injury-time goal as they lost 1-0 at high-flying Wrexham on Tuesday evening.

The hosts were on top for long spells, with goalkeeper Ben Killip on good form, and eventually won it with a fine goal in the 93rd minute.

The Reds are winless in five and slipped down two places to eighth in the League One table.

Jon Russell came in for Kelechi Nwakali in the only change from the FA Cup on Saturday.

Barnsley started well but it was the hosts who had the first shot when Ryan Barnett’s low effort from just outside the box was pushed wide by Ben Killip.

Wrexham goalkeeper Callum Burton came off injured midway through the first half for Mark Howard.

Barnsley’s first chance arrived on 29 minutes when Russell evaded his marker to meet a Luca Connell corner from the right wing but headed well wide.

Killip made a better save from ex-Red Matty James who unleashed a powerful 25-yard effort, before Ollie Palmer headed over from a James McClean cross. Palmer also smashed over a bouncing ball on the right of the box after getting away from Marc Roberts and Mael de Gevigney to latch onto a long pass.

The hosts were the better side overall in a fairly dull first half.

After the break, Killip easily saved a 20-yard effort from ex-Red Elliot Lee then touched over a better effort from the same player, from slightly further out. Killip also denied Max Cleworth from a tight angle on the right after a one, two with Barnett.

Adam Phillips had Barnsley’s first shot on goal after 68 minutes, a 25-yard effort which was easily saved, after good work on the right by substitute Fabio Jalo.

Jalo then received a pass from Phillips and beat Lewis Brunt on the right of the box but his 15-yard shot was tipped over by Howard.

Veteran striker Steven Fletcher curled a 15-yard effort just over for Wrexham on 89 minutes.

Oliver Rathbone got the winner when, after collecting a pass from Eoghan O’Connell, he was allowed to run from near halfway to about 25 yards out when he expectedly found the bottom right corner.
