TWO local schools are calling for the support of Barnsley residents after a ‘distressing act of vandalism’ that occurred at their shared building recently.

Forest Academy and Springwell Alternative Academy both share the same school building on Thornton Road in Kendray over the weekend of March 8 and 9.

Both schools have asked local residents for their support to help a ‘cornerstone’ of the community which cares for vulnerable children.

Natalie Myers, head of Springwell Alternative Academy, told the Chronicle the vandalism has caused ‘substantial damage’.

She added: “We are deeply saddened and disheartened by this senseless act.

“This centre is more than just a building - it’s a lifeline for many of our students, a place where they find support and a sense of belonging.

“To see it targeted in this way is truly devastating.”

But despite the vandalism, Natalie is hoping that the ‘resilient spirit’ of the community will shine through.

Pupils have taken the initiative to organise a collection drive, appealing to the generosity of the public for donations of toys, books, and educational equipment to replace the items lost in the vandalism.

Natalie added: “Our pupils are incredibly strong and determined.

“They are eager to contribute to the rebuilding effort and show that they will not be deterred by this setback.

“We are immensely proud of their community spirit and their desire to help restore their learning environment.”

Amidst the challenges, there is still a beacon of hope for both schools.

Following the initial outpouring of support, the schools have announced an exciting development for the future.

Plans are in progress to transform the vandalised building into a vibrant ‘Discovery Centre’, scheduled to open its doors in September.

This centre will provide a dedicated space for primary pupils to engage in play-based learning, nurturing early learning skills and fostering crucial emotional resilience.

It will offer a safe, stimulating, and inclusive environment where children can explore, learn, and grow through interactive activities and tailored support.

A spokesperson for Forest Academy added: “We are incredibly enthusiastic about this new chapter for the building.

“The Discovery Centre will serve as a valuable resource for younger pupils, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive academically and emotionally.

“We are determined to transform this challenging situation into an opportunity for positive growth.”

Residents who wish to contribute can drop off donated items at either Forest Academy or Springwell Alternative Academy during regular school hours.

The incident has been reported to the South Yorkshire Police, and an investigation is currently underway.

A spokesperson for the force said: “On Saturday March 8, at around 4pm, we were called to reports of criminal damage on Thornton Road in Kendray.

“It is reported that a group of seven teenagers broke into premises, causing damage to the surrounding fence and building.

“It is reported that the group shortly left the scene on foot.

“Enquiries remain ongoing and anyone with information is asked to get in touch by calling 101 and quoting incident number 680 of March 8 2025.”
