BARNSLEY Council bosses have urged residents to remain vigilant after scammers attempted to target residents regarding winter fuel payment support.

Earlier this month, ruling cabinet members signed off on the Household Support Fund which will help ensure help is available for those who need it.

A total of £2.35m has been made available which will predominantly help pensioners who would have missed out on a winter fuel allowance payment following the government’s decision to alter eligibility rules.

However, the council have been made aware of scammers targeting some of the most vulnerable people in the borough.

A spokesperson said: “We’ve been made aware of winter fuel and financial support scams circulating and targeting people.

“We will never contact you by text or ask you to click a link in a text message.
