An MP for the Barnsley area has shown his support for a campaign for people to start voting at the age of 16.

John Healey, MP for Wentworth and Dearne, has become an official supporter of the campaign's website. There are more than 1.5 million 16 and 17 year-olds in the UK currently denied the vote.

John said: "I've supported the idea of lowering the voting age to 16 for some time. Many young people are really interested in lots of issues and want to influence decision-makers and get involved in campaigns."

He said their voice had been heard on issues including raising university tuition fees, scrapping the Future Jobs Fund and Education Maintenance Allowance.

"Sixteen and 17-year-olds have valid views, they should get the chance to have their say and we should listen to them. I call on people of all ages to back this campaign by visiting the site and becoming a supporter too," said John.
