RULING cabinet members gave their ‘whole-hearted’ support to a scheme which will support thousands of the town’s worst-off residents this winter.
The Household Support Fund (HSF) will ensure help is available for those who require it throughout the colder months after a £2.35m sum was made available.
The cash - which will predominantly help pensioners who would have missed out on a winter fuel allowance payment following the government’s decision to alter eligibility rules - will also go towards heating vouchers and free school meals up to March 2025.
Cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, Coun James Higginbottom, said: “I wholeheartedly support this - it’s a real demonstration that this Labour council will support those in greatest need or at risk of slipping through the net otherwise.
“It’s great to hear that the thorough communications campaign has already started.”
