WOMBWELL Town’s midweek match was postponed after one of their players suffered a serious injury and they faced a potential five-hour wait for an ambulance.

Cian Guest suffered a broken collarbone after 78 minutes with his previously-unbeaten team 2-0 down to Selby Town in NCEL Division One on Tuesday.

Town manager Karl Rose said: “Cian has done it a few times before. It was a coming together with no malice.

“The lad was in agony, screaming away. We called for the ambulance straight away, they said it could take up to five hours so we had to control the situation and football became secondary.

“Both teams agreed we just had to take care of the lad. We were trying to keep him warm but it started to rain a lot so we had to get him up and get him to hospital. We managed to do that and he got treated.

“He’s due to have an operation this week. It is never nice to see somebody in that much pain. We send him our best wishes.”

Rose is unsure if the game will be replayed.

“The case will go to the league and they will decide. The precedent is to replay the game but we will leave it up to the league.”

Town looked set to suffer a first defeat in their 12th game of the league season.

Rose said: “We were poor. Selby were the better side. We made our own downfall with two back passes which were short and let them score. We had a couple cleared off the line. It didn’t drop for us in the box and lacked quality.

“We were starting to get back on top.

“The big thing at this level is consistency. The lads have been outstanding up until now in October. We try to avoid complacency and taking things for granted. We have been so good and maybe there was bad performance coming.

“Who is to say wouldn’t have come back? But it is a wake-up call.”

Town are now third with 29 points from 11 games.

Dearne and District are second after winning 1-0 at Glasshoughton on Tuesday. Luke Skelton scored on the stroke of half-time.

Athersley Rec won 2-1 at Ilkley Town on Tuesday. Nathan Perks and Tingle put them 2-0 up before a reply.

Rec are fourth in the table.

Meanwhile, Penistone Church stayed top of the Premier Division despite losing twice this week.

They lost 3-2 at Thackley in a top of the table clash on Tuesday. Leon Hurles-Brook put Church in front then, after the hosts scored three times, netted late on.
