A BLUE plaque commemorating the 200 Hungarian refugees who arrived in Barnsley in 1956 has found a home.

The plaque will be unveiled at the National Union of Mineworkers’ building on Huddersfield Road on October 23 at 2pm.

The unveiling will be accompanied by presentations from both the Hungarian Consul General, Dr L Risko-Nagy and Dr Andrew Zsigmond who was one of the refugees, with a welcome by Mayor John Clarke.

Chris Skidmore, area chairman of the NUM and Paul Stebbing, council archives and local studies officer, will also speak.

Organisers have welcomed all to attend, and are particularly interested in seeing any of the original refugees or their descendants attending.
