Barnsley Woolley Miners called off their game on Saturday after travellers camped in the Shaw Lane carpark then the cricket pitch.

The match against Appleby Frodingham in the Yorkshire Premier South was abandoned after 44 overs.

A Barnsley statement read: “We were notified by Shaw Lane on Wednesday evening that travellers had camped in the car park.

“This was obviously concerning for the club as we are coming to the end of our season with both first and second teams fighting for survival.

“As always, the safety of our players and opponents alongside officials is paramount to any decisions the club makes.

“We informed the league and our opponents, Appleby Frodingham, who have been both supportive and empathetic with our situation and had the same mindset of getting the game on.

“We took precautions to ensure we kept to one side of Shaw Lane and even asked the travellers to be respectful of the game and allow minimal disruption (they have lots of kids running around). This worked for around 44 overs until a ball was edged towards the car park where the caravans were situated. On retrieving the ball, our fielder was confronted, and our captain then approached the travellers, who then threatened both with physical violence if the ball were to go anywhere near them again.

“At this stage, the safety of players was at risk, and the umpires and captains decided to abandon the game. Which was totally the right decision.”

The club called the police and have emailed MP Stephanie Peacock.

“The travellers have since moved from the car park onto the cricket field, ensuring that we definitely can not play.

“We have had permission from the league to replay the fixture of which we are very grateful.

“We do have a home fixture on Bank Holiday Monday, and we will have to reverse the fixture in order for this to take place.

“The damage from the travellers being in situ has seen human and animal excrement and urine around our site, and they have been driving all around the field and cricket square.

“There has been damage to the mobile cover, the roll on nets. They have broken into the equipment store.”
