WHEN her daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer a caring mother went above and beyond to make sure all young people whose lives have been destroyed by the disease feel supported.
Molly Dougherty, 24, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma last year, while eight months pregnant.
The news came as a huge shock to the whole family, but her mother, Amanda Glover, joined her every step of the way.
Molly’s son Tommy had to be delivered early, allowing her to go through treatment with operations and chemotherapy.
While by her bedside at Weston Park Hospital, her 55-year-old supermum began planning fundraising events to help young people in the same situation as her daughter.
She told the Chronicle: “While she was being treated we decided we wanted to give something back for all the young people who live with cancer.
“We had a big gala at The Greyhound pub in Worsbrough.
“Then we had a raffle and we’ve been doing extra bits and pieces.”
The gala event was held last month and raised an impressive £5,900, with the raffle - which featured prizes including a Prada bag and Gucci sunglasses - brought the total raised to more than £13,000.
She has also been selling discounted baby products like formula and toys, with funds going back to charity.
The constant stream of work has proved helpful to the family while they’ve been struggling.
“We’ve had a really bad year,” she added.
“So this gives me something else to focus on - we organised some of the fundraising in the hospital while she’s been getting chemo.
“It’s been really hard for Molly, she’s spent most of her life the past year in hospital.
“Having this has helped.”
Now she’s been put forward for this year’s Proud of Barnsley awards, a shock that left her a little speechless.
“Bless them for putting me forward - thank you so much.”
