THIS season marks 70 years since a live radio report of Barnsley Football Club’s games were broadcast to the hospital - and the service is still going strong.
First aired in 1954, the Barnsley Football Club broadcasts were conceived by dedicated volunteers eager to connect patients who were staying in Barnsley Hospital with the world outside.
Over the years, it has become cherished by fans and volunteers alike, evolving with the times but maintaining its humble beginnings, making the best use of limited equipment and resources.
The current group of volunteer commentators boasts a combined 120 years of service.
Phil Hall has been volunteering for 51 years and said: “I’ve really enjoyed passing on my knowledge and love of Barnsley FC to patients in the hospital, and, as a hospital volunteer and governor myself, I know how much the commentary service is appreciated by patients and staff alike.
“It’s good to know that my commentary colleagues and I are helping to make a small difference to patients staying in Barnsley Hospital.”
