WHILE his fellow former Penistone Grammar School pupil John Stones just missed out on the Euros title last weekend, motorsport star Oliver Rowland believes he still has an outside chance of taking silverware on Sunday.

The 30-year-old from Penistone is currently fifth in the Formula E standings ahead of the double-header in London this weekend which are the final races of the season.

He is 36 points off top and 24 behind third so, with 50 available from the two races, could move up the standings.

Rowland told the Chronicle: “Stranger things have happened than me winning the title.

“We probably need to win both races then external factors will decide it.

“It’s a small, small chance but we have had really good weekends already this season so you never know.

“It’s my home race and a tight, twisty, technical course.

“I have always enjoyed it and been fast but not had much luck. I am hoping this time I will.”

Rowland’s title chances took a severe blow last month when he had to pull out of both races in Portland, USA, due to illness.

He said: “I am all better now.

“It was bad timing and, when I was the most unwell, it was when I needed to be racing.

“It’s really unfortunate but I’ve moved on from it now and I am totally better.

“We’re disappointed we couldn’t gain any points on the leaders but we didn’t lose any either so we’re still quite a good position.”

Rowland has had his best season ever, finishing on the podium five times and winning once in Italy.

He has been one of the star performers in the 16-race electric car series which has stops across the world throughout the year.

He said: “I would say it’s been the best season in terms of my personal performances.

“In season six we were second in the championship going into the final race. But on a personal note this has probably been my best.

“It’s been a great season. This wasn’t on our radar.

“Best case scenario was top five, that was the ultimate goal.

“We’re already in that position and we want to finish the year on a high.

“It was supposed to be a building year for us knowing the car would improve significantly next year.

“It’s hugely positive to compete where we’ve been competing. Everybody is pretty confident about the future.”

Both races this weekend will be streamed on discovery+ and also shown free to air in the UK on Quest, from 4.45-6pm on Saturday and Sunday.
