Liam Lindsay impressed at Wembley this week and is now targeting a first appearance at Hampden Park and a call-up to the Scottish national team.

The 21-year-old centre-back, who signed for Barnsley from Partick Thistle in the summer, excelled in the Carabao Cup against Premier League Tottenham alongside captain Angus MacDonald who is also eligible to play for Scotland.

Gordon Strachan's Tartan Army can still qualify for next summer's World Cup if they win their final two group games. Lindsay told the Chronicle: "The goal is to play for Scotland so if I keep playing and performing well then I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be in the squad. There are two big games coming up so hopefully they can go and do the business and get to the World Cup because it has been too long."

Lindsay missed the start of the season with a groin injury but has played the last three league games. He said: "It was a week before the start of the season so it was bad timing. It's been tough but I am back and raring to go. I am delighted to get back in the team and show what I can do. I am happy with how I have been doing.

"The Championship is very tough and it shows what the league is like financially when you are coming up against legends like John Terry for Aston Villa."
