THERE was a special surprise at the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Wath Pope Pius X Catholic High when Pope Benedict XVI gave his blessing to the school’s new status.
“I didn’t know anything about it, it had all been arranged as a surprise,” said headteacher Anne Winfield.
In September the school will be known as Saint Pius X Catholic High School - A Specialist School in Humanities.
On Friday the Bishop of Hallam, John Rawsthorne, led the anniversary celebrations.
“It was a wonderful day attended by local headteachers, visitors from the local authority, the diocese and past staff and pupils,” said Mrs Winfield.
Past staff related memories, there were readings celebrating the past and present and a slide show of photographs of 50 years.
It closed with a poem, ‘Black Diamonds’ read by former deputy head/acting head, Dave Caulfield, which had been written for the opening of the school in 1957.
