ALTON Towers operator Merlin is facing a hefty fine after it admitted breaking health and safety laws over a rollercoaster crash which led to a Barnsley teenager having her leg amputated.

Barnsley teenagers Leah Washington and Joe Pugh were among five seriously injured in the crash on June 2 last year.

Leah, 18, of Gawber, had to have her left leg amputated and boyfriend Joe, 19, of Ardsley, suffered two shattered kneecaps when a carriage on The Smiler ride crashed into another static car on the track.

The couple and their families were in court for Friday’s hearing in North Staffordshire when Merlin pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations. The company will be sentenced next month.
