Nine-year-old Abigail Miles from Tankersley has no fears about jumping in the deep end - as she's proving to be one of the most promising young swimmers in Yorkshire.
Abigail, of Carr Lane, is in the Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club and qualified for the Yorkshire winter competition held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, last weekend.
Qualifying times to get into the contest were tight and Abigail, a pupil at Tankersley St Peter's, was up against some of the best young swimmers in the county.
She competed in five events, winning a silver medal in the 50m backstroke and a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke. She finished in the top eight in all her events achieving personal bests.
Her dad Nigel, 43, said Abigail started swimming seriously aged five and took to it like a duck to water. "She wants one day to be an Olympic athlete and is totally dedicated to her training, putting in two hours, five times a week," he said.
"She had swimming lessons but we knew there was something there when she got all her badges in double quick time. I take my hat off to her."
