More than 40 summer school pupils have been presented with Kindles by Barnsley FC legend Bruce Dyer.

The reason behind the week-long event was to introduce year six pupils to each other before they move up to secondary school in September.

Forty-six Kindles were being given to every child who attended the summer school every day.

Children who took part learned literacy and numeracy skills while fun activities like building bottle rockets, designing logos and a CSI day mixed in with the education side.

Kevin Williams,  the parent support advisor at Kirk Balk, said: "We arranged to take them down to Oakwell one of the days and some children played football and others did street dancing.

"Lots of them don't know each other as they're coming up from different schools so this is a good way to introduce them to each other.

"These activities were a bit of fun but tied in with some of the learning."
