BARNSLEY FC lost £2.8million during the 2023/24 season, the club’s latest annual accounts reveal.

The statement covered a 13-month period between June 1, 2023 and June 30 2024, during which the club reports an operating loss of almost £9.7million compared to £5.9million the previous year.

They made £6.8million profit in player trading, almost £5million more than in the previous accounting year, after selling the likes of Mads Andersen and Liam Kitching – with the multi-million fees received in instalments over multiple seasons.

The overall loss was down on the previous year’s loss which was £4million.

£4.2million was put into the club by the shareholders as equity.

Turnover fell by slightly more than £500,000 from the previous season – to just under £9million – with the club citing contributing factors of missing out on a second straight play-off final and outsourcing their retail merchandising which was down by more than £500,000. Football League distributions, matchday revenue and broadcasting money were all down on the previous year.

Salaries have increased from £8,329,385 to £10,156,405.

Average league attendances increased by ten per cent on the previous year, to 12,681, while revenue from sponsorship and advertising as well as catering also increased.
