OVER the course of three years one pub’s annual events have managed to raise more than £5,000 for Barnsley Hospital Charity.
The team at the Crown and Anchor in Barugh Green have supported the hospital for a while now, hosting three annual events a firework night, a music festival and family day as well as a handful of smaller activities to raise funds for the charity.
Manager Matt Horn told the Chronicle: “We already had lots of events going on at the pub, so we put something out asking if there are any local charities people would like us to get involved with and who could benefit from it.
“The hospital’s a lynchpin at the centre of the town we’ve all been there, we’ll all go there at some point.
“We’ve all got a story connected to it.
“Although we’ve done work previously with small families and local fundraisers, this is one that has touched everyone with where the money goes.”
Their work has also encouraged customers to get involved, as one regular, Tom Allott, took on a unique fundraising challenge of ‘doing nothing’ and went without cutting his hair or shaving for a whole year.
Over the course of the past year, he raised £500 for the hospital through this simple act and saved a bit on the cost of hairdressers as well.
“It sounds cliche, but it’s not just me, there’s so many people involved,” Matt added.
“Volunteers come in and do more than anyone, they’re insane, Jane Mills and Sam Bentley from the charity are always at these events.
“It’s great what we’ve been able to do, but equally they’ve helped out as well.”
