Barnsley goalkeeper Jackson Smith could be set for a loan move after Gabriel Slonina was brought in last week, while Darrell Clarke said there was 'always a chance' of a new signing this week.

The Reds brought in USA international Slonina on loan for the season from Chelsea on Friday. He looks set to play in the EFL Cup at Wigan tomorrow.

That could mean that previous summer signing Smith, who penned a four-year deal, is loaned out. Ben Killip played in goal in the first game on Friday.

Clarke said: “Jackson took a bit of time to get used to the pace of our training and the way we work. He’s settling a bit and he's fighting to be number one but we’ll look at loan options if they are right. We see him as a long-term asset but it's important he gets gametime with his lack of experience.”

Clarke said there was ‘always a chance’ of a new signing before the Wigan game, with the Reds thought to be looking to bring in another midfielder as well as their ongoing search for strikers. Separate to that, they remain interested in Davis Keillor-Dunn, who played against them for Mansfield on Friday, but are thought to be yet to match the Stags’ valuation after an agreement between the clubs on price looked very close last week.

Clarke revealed on Friday that Callum Styles didn’t play in the season-opener against Mansfield on Friday as there was interest from other clubs and he ‘wasn’t in the right frame of mind.’

Asked if the Hungary international could leave this week, Clarke said: “I am not sure. It goes above my remit. There are negotiations, Mladen (Sormaz, chief executive) and the board are discussing. My key is to make sure Callum knows where the club and I stand. He’s a Barnsley player and we’ll make sure he’s trained right. He’s in the right place in terms of his fitness."
