AFFORDABILITY checks before people are allowed to gamble are being backed by a local MP.
Stephanie Peacock, who represents Barnsley East, recently spoke in a debate in Parliament on the potential of bringing in affordability checks for gambling.
Checks are set to be introduced to prevent harm to those who might be vulnerable to addiction.
Ms Peacock, who is the Shadow Minister for Media, Gambling and Sport, said: “Gambling addictions can devastate lives so it is absolutely right that we protect vulnerable children and adults, to ensure that they come to the least harm possible.
“This could include measures such as online stake limits, data sharing between gambling firms, and a crackdown on black market activity.
“At the same time, most people gamble safely, so checks must be robust, but also ensure that the industry is not at a disadvantage when they are introduced.”
