Barnsley continued their pre-season with a decent performance in a 1-0 loss at Championship Hull City on Tuesday evening.
The Reds played mainly first teamers in the first half, in which they competed well but trailed 1-0.
They then made nine half-time changes to leave them with a much younger side including trialists Luke Hall from Worksop and Selim Saied from Farnborough.
The youngsters held their own well with few chances at either end after the break.
Devante Cole, Jordan Williams, Robbie Cundy were not involved as they have minor injuries while Conor McCarthy is still returning to full fitness.
The Reds played well in the opening half an hour, looking organised and confident on the ball.
Barnsley should have taken the lead in the 12th minute when Nicky Cadden received a Liam Kitching pass on the left of the box and tricked his way past a defender then sent a low cross across the face of goal but Oli Shaw fired over the empty net from a few yards out.
Ryan Woods gifted Herbie Kane the ball on the halfway line and he tried to lob the goalkeeper Matt Ingram who ran back to catch it.
James Norwood then brilliantly turned a defender before shooting from 25 yards but Ingram turned it wide.
But it was Hull who opened the scoring in the 31st minute as Will Jarvis was left unmarked at the back post to beat Ben Killip with a scuffed finished after a move down the right.
Killip then made a good save from a low shot from the edge of a crowded box before the rebound was headed onto the bar by Benjamin Tetteh. Killip also produced a fine save to touch a Jarvis shot around his left post.
In the second half, Tetteh was played through but hooked over the bar when one-on-one with Killip.
Fabio Jalo’s 30-yard free-kick was kept out of the bottom left corner by the goalkeeper.
Hull looked certain to double their lead on the break but Jack Shepherd denied Liam Delap with a superb last-ditch tackle.
