NEW shop fronts, more public spaces, free wi-fi and a ‘shared space’ scheme for pedestrians and motorists have been mooted as part of wider plans to transform Barnsley town centre.

Detailed proposals for prime areas in the town centre have been put together by planning consultants Arup on behalf of Barnsley Council, and these will be discussed by council bosses when they meet on Wednesday.

The extensive document - which sets out how key areas in the town centre can be revitalised alongside the main £100m Better Barnsley scheme - provides a framework for future development.
