TWO passengers were taken to hospital after a bus crashed into a pedestrian crossing near the town centre on Monday lunchtime.

The smash occurred when the bus was pulling off Harborough Hill Road towards Eldon Street and Old Mill Lane at the junction behind the B and M store.

Paul Lynch, managing director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: "While travelling at a slow speed up Old Mill Lane, a bus driver appears to have been dazzled by the low-setting winter sun and, as a result, caught the side of a pelican crossing signal post as he went round a bend in the road.

"There were ten passengers on board and, as a precaution, two were taken to hospital with suspected minor injuries.

"The incident is being investigated by Stagecoach and South Yorkshire Police so we are unable to comment further at this time."
