WOMBWELL town centre’s transformation is set to take a step closer after the council purchases the disused public toilets.
Barnsley Council has completed the legal process required to buy the facilities on High Street, which will be demolished to make way for further improvements to the public realm.
A planning application is currently being prepared for the removal, which will be the council’s latest step to refresh the high street as part of its Principal Towns programme.
So far, work includes pavement improvements to both sides of the high street, road resurfacing, new seating, litter bins and planters, levelling sunken paving and painting barriers and lamp posts.
Coun Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “Completing this purchase is another key step forward in our improvements to Wombwell town centre.
“It is the last piece of the puzzle in creating a decluttered, attractive high street with open sight lines across the precinct.
“We’ve already made changes to enhance the shopping experience for local residents and visitors to Wombwell and our plans to demolish the disused public toilet and further improve the public realm will continue this process.”
