Barnsley gained their first ever win at Bolton Wanderers’ current ground as they won 2-1 in the FA Cup first round.

An early own goal put the Reds in front then Adam Phillips scored his first goal for the club in spectacular style before half-time.

Bolton pulled one back late on but Barnsley will take their place in the second round draw.

Michael Duff made three changes from the 2-0 win over Forest Green Rovers in the league a week earlier.

Jack Walton, Phillips and Slobodan Tedic came in for Brad Collins, Josh Benson and James Norwood.

Bolton had more possession in the first half and plenty of set pieces but the Reds defence held firm and it was the visitors who looked much more threatening.

The Reds took the lead in the sixth minute when Nicky Cadden’s left-wing cross was turned into his own net from close range by home captain Ricardo Santos.

Bolton thought they had levelled five minutes later when Dion Charles headed in from a Kieran Sadlier cross but the flag was up for offside.

Jordan Williams should have made it 2-0 when Devante Cole put him clean through but the wing-back took a poor touch and goalkeeper James Trafford smothered at his feet.

Cole also missed a big chance for 2-0 minutes later when a Phillips cross from the right seemed to hit him in the midriff eight yards out when unmarked. He seemed unsure whether to head or kick it, and it rolled to the goalkeeper.

Herbie Kane’s deep cross almost crept in but was pushed away by Trafford then, at the other end, Dapo Afolayan sent a weak shot straight at Walton from 15 yards out on the left.

Bolton had a succession of corners and free-kicks but never came close to scoring in that spell, with Santos heading well wide.

The second goal was an outstanding team move. Liam Kitching played a fine 50-yard crossfield ball from the halfway line to the right of the home box where Williams perfectly volleyed it back to Phillips who took one touch about 25 yards out and found the top right corner.

Charles then headed wide from another Sadlier cross on the right but the hosts went in at half-time 2-0 behind.

Seconds into the second half, Bolton’s Charles had another goal ruled out for offside after poking in from close range. Phillips then fired just wide of the bottom left corner from almost 25 yards.

Cole was gifted the ball by the home goalkeeper 40 yards out but his shot at the empty net was weak and, when Tedic tried to help it on on the edge of the box, Trafford got back on his line to catch easily. Tedic then was put clean through by a fine Williams long ball but chested it down too far in front of himself and Trafford gathered.

Herbie Kane cut past a defender on the right of the box but curled a shot wide of the top left corner then Kitching’s low 22-yard effort was pushed wide of the bottom left corner.

The hosts pulled a goal back on 80 minutes when substitute Jon Dadi Bodvarsson headed in ten yards out after meeting a right-wing cross.

Elias Kachunga glanced a header well off-target then also blazed over with an overhead kick.

Substitute Ziyad Larkeche missed a fine chance for 3-1 deep in injury-time when he dragged a shot wide 15 yards out after a counter-attack.
