The 49-year-old joins up with the new Terriers boss and fellow German Jan Siewert. He has been replaced by academy coach Dale Tonge who played for the Reds.
Winkler moved to Oakwell over the summer as assistant to new head coach Daniel Stendel, who has taken the South Yorkshire club into fifth place in League One.
Winkler has been a key part of Stendel’s success, translating in training for the head coach who could not speak English when he arrived and doing the majority of press conferences.
