KNIFE crime was a key focus of the major police operation that swept across the town centre on Wednesday.

Officers in Barnsley are looking at ways to eliminate the use of weapons, and in particular knives, within the community.

Chief Superintendent Scott Green said: “There has been, across the whole of South Yorkshire, a moderate increase in knife crime and young people carrying knives but I must stress it is not significant in Barnsley. I want to be clear about that.

“However, given the number of young people that pass through the interchange, as part of Operation Duxford we have a knife arch there.”
