THIS is the first glimpse inside the new Barnsley College Sixth Form College which dominates the Shambles Street skyline in the town centre.

It sits on the site of the old Central Library, which was demolished along with a parade of shops and offices to make way for the ultramodern facility, a decision which caused controversy among those who objected to the relocation of the 1970s-built library.

The much anticipated 6,800 sq m building is more than double the size of the existing Eastgate sixth form it is replacing and will eventually be home to 1,200 students.

Work to the new building officially began last October and in little over 12 months the slick four storey structure has quickly taken shape.
