Fabio Jalo and Jon Russell both scored twice as Barnsley stunned promotion-chasing Bolton Wanderers with a 4-1 home win – their first victory under interim head coach Conor Houirhane.
The Reds dominated most of the first half and went 2-0 up thanks to goals by Jon Russell and Jalo who added another midway through the second period.
Bolton replied but Russell made sure of the victory which ended a seven-match winless run.
Barnsley moved up two places in the League One table to 11th.
Conor Hourihane made three changes from the side that lost 6-2 at Birmingham a week earlier. Jonathan Bland, Fabio Jalo and fit-again Josh Earl returned to the 11 for the suspended Mael de Gevigney, Max Watters, who was not in the squad, and Corey O’Keeffe who was benched after 31 successive league starts. Barry Cotter was on the bench after injury.
The Reds used a 4-3-3 formation with Bland and Earl the full-backs while Davis Keillor-Dunn was up front with Stephen Humphrys and Fabio Jalo on the wings.
The hosts made a very positive start and took the lead on 15 minutes when Russell burst into the box and found the bottom right corner from 15 yards.
Adam Phillips almost doubled the lead soon after with a low 30-yard effort which goalkeeper Nathan Baxter just tipped out of his bottom right corner.
The second goal was courtesy of an excellent set piece routine. After Keillor-Dunn went to take a free-kick 40 yards out, he left it to Luca Connell who passed to Phillips to cross from the left and Earl volleyed across the goal at the back post for Jalo to tap in.
Bolton, who had been totally dominated, made a treble change on 38 minutes with two tactical decisions and one due to a serious-looking injury to Aaron Morley.
Bolton had their first chances in first half stoppage time as Aaron Collins volleyed well off target from a cross by ex-Red John McAtee who then had a better opportunity as he burst into the box but shot wide of the bottom right corner.
Bolton began the second half on top but almost conceded on the break when Humphrys robbed a defender but his pass to Keillor-Dunn was caught by the goalkeeper.
Home goalkeeper Kieren Flavell dropped a left-wing corner but George Thomason could not turn in at the back post.
Jalo made it 3-0 when, after Connell won the ball and Keillor-Dunn played him in on the left of the box, he checked past a defender and blasted home.
Bolton replied almost instantly through Aaron Collins who latched onto a Jay Matete pass, rounded the goalkeeper and tapped into the empty net.
Bolton went down to ten men when, having made all their changes, Jordi Osei-Tutu came off injured.
The fourth goal arrived on 86 minutes when Russell headed in a few yards out from a lofted Phillips cross on the right.
Collins should have pulled another one back when he went clean through again but he dragged wide of the bottom right corner.
Keillor-Dunn was denied by the goalkeeper at point blank range in injury-time after a fine run down the left by substitute Dexter Lembikisa, who then fired a good chance over himself.

AS IT HAPPENED
-
-
3:02pm
Jalo has a weak shot blocked after a good run past a defender
-
3:05pm
Earl loses the ball and Bolton break down the right then win a throw. But Earl eventually gets it back wins a free-kick
-
3:06pm
Keillor Dunn is up against Bolton's huge centre-back Ricardo Santos. There must be the best part of a foot in size difference and several stone. He won't compete physically but can Barnsley play round the big defender?
-
3:08pm
Barnsley win a throw on the right and leave it for Roberts
-
3:08pm
8 Roberts' long throw on the right is headed out then Jalo commits a foul on the edge of the box
-
3:09pm
Jalo does really well to bring down a long Roberts pass on the right, burst into the box past a man and drill a low cross which is cleared
-
3:10pm
Decent move from right to left but Humphrys has the first shot of the game at a very tight angle and puts it well high and wide. The away fans love it as he used to play for Wigan
-
3:12pm
Roberts finds Jalo again on the right who slips in Phillips in the box and he tries to pull it back to Russell but a defender intercepts
-
3:13pm
Russell wins the ball high up the pitch and passes to DKD in the box but he's half tackled and the ball runs loose to the goalkeeper
-
3:13pm
Good cross by Bolton's Dacres Cogley but just headed away
-
3:15pm
Jon Russell opens the scoring!
-
3:16pm
Deserved after a really positive start. He drives into the box and finds the bottom right corner for his seventh goal of the season
-
3:17pm
Now Josh Earl curls over from about 22 yards out. All Barnsley
-
3:18pm
The Bolton goalkeeper has had some treatment. I think the visitors just wanted a team talk.
-
3:20pm
Barnsley winning all the loose balls at the moment. They look like the team with promotion on the line at the moment not Bolton
-
3:20pm
Nearly 2-0. Phillips shoots from about 30 yards and Nathan Baxter just claws it out of the bottom left corner. Russell had won the ball
-
3:21pm
DKD corner headed out then his next cross is caught
-
3:22pm
Davis Keillor-Dunn booked for a foul on Jordi Osei-Tutu

-
3:24pm
Humphrys wins a free-kick in a central area about 40 yards from goal
-
3:25pm
Fabio Jalo doubles the lead
-
3:27pm
A great set piece routine by the Reds, and a bit cheeky. DKD goes to take a free-kick 40 yards out but then leaves it for Connell and it's crossed to the back post where Earl, I think, volleys across goal for Jalo to tap in
-
3:28pm
Roberts long throw on the right goes out of play at the front post with Barnsley wanting a corner

3:33pm
McAtee gifts the ball to Keillor Dunn who tries to beat the goalkeeper from 40 yards but undercuts it and it's easily caught
-
3:34pm
I can't remember Barnsley being so dominant for a while. Bolton have been abject so far
-
3:34pm
Jalo, who has done well, wins a free-kick on the right
-
3:35pm
Free-kick over hit and Barnsley can't get the cross in from the left
-
3:36pm
Bolton's Aaron Morley is down after a tackle by McCarthy. The Reds were looking to attack but the referee stopped the game for Morley to get treatment
-
3:37pm
Morley down looking hurt and will be replaced
-
3:38pm
-
3:38pm
Gethin Jones on for Dacres-Cogley, Alex Murphy for George Johnston and Jay Matete for Morley
-
3:41pm
Morley stretchered off, looks a bad one
-
3:42pm
Tutu-Osei has moved form the left to the right. His pace against Earl could be a match-up to keep an eye on
-
3:42pm
Matete breaks through the Barnsley midfield then Connell pulls him back and it's a free-kick about 40 yards out
-
3:43pm
Bolton make a mess of a cross field pass for the free-kick then give away one of their own trying to block the counter-attack
-
3:44pm
Humphrys wins the ball then Russell looks to have won a corner on the left but a goal kick is given
-
3:45pm
Eight added minutes this half
-
3:45pm
Mainly due to that injury to Aaron Morley
-
3:47pm
Humphrys beats ex-Red Gethin Jones in the air on the left touchline and would be free in the box but just can't keep the ball from going for a goal kick
-
3:48pm
Jones sees a throw headed by Connell straight to DKD who again tries a long-range effort, this time about 30 yards out, but it's wide
-
3:49pm
Bolton's first chance. McAtee crosses from the left and Aaron Collins meets it at the back post but volleys well over
-
3:50pm
Now ex-Red McAtee has an even better chance as he charges into the box on the break and fires wide of the bottom right corner about 15 yards out
-
3:52pm
Long throw on right taken by Roberts and kept in by Phillips then Connell's cross floats out
-
3:53pm

-
4:17pm
54 Roberts heads the corner out then the next cross is massively overhit
-
4:18pm
Nice Barnsley move sees Jalo finds Phillips on right of box but his cross is caught
-
4:19pm
The away end are a lot louder than before the break. They smell a way back into the game after their side started the second half brightly
-
4:19pm
A booking for one of the Barnsley coaches, I think Hourihane, for something he said
-
4:20pm
Jordi Osei-Tutu fouled by Earl and wins a free-kick on the right
