WOMBWELL Town will go into the final game of the NCEL Division One season on Saturday knowing they could still win the title.

Town are second in the table, a point off leaders Horbury Town – with one side to be promoted automatically and four more competing in the play-offs.

They are due to host 17th-placed Athersley Rec in a Barnsley derby from 3pm.

To win the title, they would need to better the result of Horbury who visit Maltby who won at Wakefield in midweek to knock them out of the race for first place.

Manager Karl Rose said: “We’re really looking forward to it. This is why you play football to try to win leagues.

“We know we’re reliant on other results but, when we were 18 points behind Horbury, we would definitely have taken this.

“It’s been a phenomenal effort all season.

“The best team at the end of the season wins it and deserves it.

“Strange things happen in football.

“All we can do is take care of business.

“It won’t be an easy game.

“Rec have had a great season.

“They started really well. The wheels came off for a small spell but they are doing well now. We have a lot of friends there but don’t expect any favours.

“What is on the line for us is irrelevant for them.

“Hopefully it will be a big crowd.

“We want to be celebrating the title but, if we haven’t done enough, then we’ll move on to the play-offs and give that everything we have.”

Town took six points from two away games against mid-table clubs this week.

They won 5-0 at Armthorpe Welfare on Saturdas, despite having Poland international goalkeeper Seb Malkowski sent off after five minutes for a handball outside his box.

The scorers were Jordan Kershaw, Owen Fieldsend, Joshua Nodder, twice, and Jack Dando.

Town then won 2-0 at Harrogate Railway on Tuesday, having had Nodder sent off at 0-0 after 20 minutes.

Jock Curran and Dando netted.

Rose said: “The frustrating thing is we went down to ten men early in both games.

“The discipline hasn’t been good enough and we can’t keep playing with ten men.

“We played the vast majority of the games with ten men but won them both which goes to show the desire and togetherness.

“Two clean sheets and seven goals gave us a big swing in the goal difference which could be important on the last day.

“Our away performances have been phenomenal all season and we’ve only lost one.

“It’s been a big effort from the lads this week.

“We have had a lot of away games recently and the support from our fans hasn’t gone unnoticed, and our volunteers have worked tirelessly.”
