TWENTY-SIX new beds have been added to Barnsley Hospital to support the borough’s intermediate care service, it has been revealed.
The service is provided to patients after leaving hospital or when they are at risk of being admitted to hospital.
It’s described as a ‘bridge’ between hospital and independent living and aims to stabilise and improve levels of independence and wellbeing to a point where support is no longer needed or the person can be offered other appropriate care/services.
A report has revealed the service has faced ‘challenges’ over the last 12 months but a new plan has now been put in place.
It said: “We have experienced challenges over the last 12 months, leading to a review of the intermediate care service.
“We have a short-term plan and thanks to the hospital team, it has been possible to transition 26 beds into the hospital.
“This is a temporary solution with work continuing to develop a medium-term sustainable intermediate care offer.”
