LOCKE Park will be the pilot for the first smoke-free play park in Barnsley under ambitious new plans to ‘denormalise’ smoking among young people.

It was revealed by public health official Kaye Mann at a council meeting outlining new proposals to inspire a smoke free generation in Barnsley which were given the go ahead by council bosses last month to ‘denormalise’ smoking among young people and inspire a ‘smoke free generation’.

Ms Mann told the Health and Well-being Board meeting that Locke Park and Elsecar Park will be the first in a wave of play parks set to become ‘smoke free’ alongside the introduction of town centre zones, hospital grounds and school gates and entrances, following consultation with the public.

David Allen, from the Friends of Locke Park group, said a decision was taken at its meeting on August 2 that the park would make a suitable pilot area.
