A man who died following a disturbance in Kendray has been named locally as Sammy Haughton.
He is thought to be in his late-20s or early-30s.
Locals said friends and relatives of Sammy's had confirmed his death on Facebook. It is thought he was stabbed to death.
The Chronicle understands he lived at the top of Colley Crescent but died near the junction with Birk Avenue.
Police have not named the victim but is thought his body has been removed from the scene.
Colley Crescent is closed between Colley Avenue and Birk Avenue and two police cars are parked outside a house there. A further two cars are parked at either end of the blockade and officers are not letting anyone through.
A force spokesman said detectives are investigating a serious incident following a disturbance over night.
Scenes of crime officers have been undertaking a detailed examination.
One woman who lives near the scene said: "It has come over Facebook that it's Sammy Houghton. There are that many stories I won't believe anything until it's on the news.
"When it's just around you from the corner it scares you to death, especially when you have kids walking down that way.
"I was woken at 2am by ambulance lights flashing. I haven't been to sleep yet. Forensics were there at about 5.30.
"Whatever's happened it's atrocious."
Another man whose house overlooks the scene said: "I've had about 12 phone calls about it from all the lads who live round here. It's one of those things. It happens and it will happen again. Kendray's always been rough."
Others said on Sunday night there had been a disturbance outside the house on Colley Crescent which has been sealed off by police.
One woman, who works as a carer at Rockley Dene nursing home, and lives on Colley Crescent said: "There was a gang of youths knocking on doors on Sunday going into Monday morning.
"it's a shock because it's normally quiet around here."
Lorraine Smith, 51, of Colley Crescent said: "I heard banging about 3.45 and saw the street was sealed off. It's a shock."
