ONE of Barnsley Market’s great characters whose business has been in the town for almost 70 years is among those to lose out as part of the Better Barnsley project.
H Warner has been in Barnsley since 1947 but will close on Christmas Eve putting Keith Warner and his five loyal staff out of work.
Keith is third-generation guardian of the business started by his grandfather, but it was Keith’s dad Herbie Warner who brought it to Barnsley.
At one time there were six outlets - one in Wombwell, Leeds, Meadowhall, Selby, and two in Barnsley - a market stall and a shop.
Now the shop in the Metropolitan Centre arcade is all that remains after a horrifying robbery in Leeds and a worrying threat against him in Barnsley a few years ago forced him to wind down the rest of the business.
